A: 1. 1976 year model and newer Gasoline powered vehicles. 2. 1998 year model and newer Diesel powered vehicles
with GVWRs 14,000 lbs and less. 3. CNG, LNG, or LPG powered vehicles with 14,000 lbs and less. 4. Hybrid vehicles.
Q: I received a "Smog Certification required at a STAR Station" notice from DMV. What should I do?
A: You need a Smog Check from "STAR Certified Smog Check Station".
The BAR(Bureau of Automotive Repair) evaluates the work of its Smog Check Stations, and select as "STAR Certified Smog Station". The Smog Check Stations selected as "STAR Certified Smog Check Station" has higher work quality standards than other Regular Smog Check Stations.

A: Yes, The Hybrids need Smog Checks.
1. more than eight(8) years old models need the Biennial Smog Check.
2. four (4) years old and newer models do not need Smog Check when the change-of-ownership.
Q: What is the different between an "Engine Replacement" and an "Engine Change"?
A: The "Engine Replacement" is a new, rebuild, or used engine of the same maker, and same engine family (test group) as the original engine with original emission devices installed. The installation of different engine other than the original engine is called "Engine Change". The "Engine Change" is required inspection from California State Referee Station for "Referee Sticker" only once.
